Enzymes are vital for life.

There are different reasons to supplement with enzymes.

Digestive enzymes are taken along with food. They help to break down the components of your food to assist your body with the digestive process. Common enzymes are amylase, protease, and lipase, which break down macronutrients (carbs, proteins, and fats) into smaller molecules. There are other digestive enzymes, which break down fibers and sugars.

When you take enzymes away from food, they work systemically in your body to serve different functions.
