We all want to be healthy. The problem is that there is too much conflicting information available to us and most people just don't know what to listen to as the truth.
I get really fed up with people who claim to experts and are leading people toward their own special health product or fad diet that is supposed to fix everything and make their lives all better. Because the truth is that these people don't know you or your family. They don't know your lives, your genetics, your environment. They don't know who you are and what you need. And additionally, most of these experts haven't experienced what you or your children have.
Here are some of the really bad ones to watch out for:
I have written and spoken a lot about autism over the years. Its exponential effects on our youngest generations have resulted in large amounts of scientific research. And this is a good thing, because although we don't have all of the answers or the solutions yet, we have enough to empower parents to get started helping their children on their own.
Autism is multifaceted. Any approach that is not holistic is severely limiting. Autism must be approached from all sides, and from as many angles as possible in order to be effective. Whereas some children with ADHD can show immediate improvement with dietary changes, most children with autism will need other interventions along with diet in order to show any improvements at all. Again, it is multifaceted, and so it requires a holistic approach to show changes.
Think of the human experience as multi-leveled: The physical body, the mind, the emotions, the spirit, and the rest of energy that we cannot see and are not acutely aware. All of these must be addressed when it comes to autism. When I wrote, The Foundations System, I was focusing on creating a way to bring all of these levels together so that people could work with them simultaneously. This is exactly what those with autism need. There are more methods that can hep autism than what I included in the book, but the concept of bringing it all together works with whatever methods you choose to use.
One of the worst missteps a parent can take is to try a healing diet and then stop using it because no changes were apparent. The diet is simply one part of a larger puzzle that will not function if all of the other pieces are not in place. Stick to the diet no matter what. It is a vital fundamental piece of the puzzle and the rest cannot work without it being firmly in place.
All people's dietary needs are different. However, when it comes to autism, there are basic guidelines that are essential to follow for diet:
All children with autism need to have their bodies detoxified and then remain clean and toxin-free. Spiritually, a sensitive being will not be able to be grounded with the body if it is full of toxicity. And the body will not be able to function correctly when damaged by toxins.
Another thing to consider regarding autism is that some children will recover and some will not. The damage to the body for some is just too great. However, you will not know that unless you try and give it all you've got. Many, many children who were non-verbal have gained the ability to speak after implementing multi-leveled interventions. Many, many children have healed from the co-morbid conditions they were also experiencing. You have to try and then see what will happen. In other words, give your child the chance to be healthy by providing them with all that they need in order to do so.
Never, ever give up on your child or on your own ability to do something powerful to help him or her. Focus on what is needed to accomplish detoxification because it is only then that healing can occur. Remove what is causing harm and bring in what will help to heal.

Learning disabilities make life more difficult. It is important to do all that we can for our kids so that they are able to read and write and be successful in school and life. Learning and gaining knowledge are essential for living healthy, productive lives in our society.
From a holistic perspective, we want to address the cause of the problems. Damage to the brain can occur for different reasons. The wonderful news is that the brain, like the rest of the body, can heal itself, if provided with what it needs in order to do so. So before spending a lot of money and time on methods to get past learning disabilities, it is important to provide the brain with the environment it needs in order to heal and function to its highest capacity.
Toxic elements harm the body and the brain. Unfortunately, our society does not acknowledge the severity of the toxicity of most of the chemicals we are exposed to through our food, water and the air we breathe. All chemicals have a toxic effect on our bodies. The more chemicals involved, the more effects. And the more sensitive the person is to the chemicals, the more effects their bodies will experience. So first and foremost, eliminate as many chemicals from the diet and home environment that you can. This is simply accomplished by eating organic foods and use natural cleaners and body products.
Once you have removed the toxins, work on healing. There are different methods that you can try. Some powerful ones that have worked for my family include Brain Gym and Brain Balance. Handwriting Without Tears is also a fantastic way to learn to write when dygraphia is present. However, I would not recommend any of these without simultaneously addressing diet and nutrition. Everything goes hand in hand. In order to optimize brain functioning, we have to provide the nutrition that the brain and body need.
If your child is struggling with learning, do not hesitate to simultaneously employ healing diets, detoxification protocols, and proven methods that increase brain functioning. Don't limit yourself or them to one approach at a time. Bring it all together in a holistic way so that the effects can be amplified and more efficiently accomplished.
As a person with Type 1 diabetes, I know a lot about what works and does not work for maintaining healthy blood glucose levels. When I was first diagnosed, I was actually misdiagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. This is because I was 45 years old. Although it seemed ridiculous that someone as thin as I was and who ate as mindfully as I did would have Type 2 diabetes, I took my (mis)disagnosis seriously and moved full-force into attempting to reverse the disease.
I studied and implemented vegan diets by Dr. Joel Fuhrman and then Dr. Gabriel Cousins. Neither worked at all to lower my extremely high blood glucose levels. I exercised just like these doctors said to do, and I ate exactly what I was supposed to eat. It was mind-numbingly frustrating to read about all of the people who were able to be successful using their protocols, and yet I was only failing miserably. Afterall, I hadn't been eating a SAD (Standard American Diet) in the first place and I didn't have anything to detox from my diet, which is part of what these diets would accomplish. I had already started on an insulin pump, but I couldn't stop the spikes I would get after eating.
After 6 months of this craziness, I took matters into my own hands and went a completely different way. I found Dr. Richard Bernstein's Diabetes Solution book and implemented his low carb/high protein diet for diabetes. The results were immediate. Blood glucose levels were significantly lower and I stayed consistently below 140 mg/dl.
Dr. Bernstein's method works for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. I recommend it with all of my heart for Type 1's. Type 2's have to figure out exactly what they need before choosing a diet. If they need to detox due to an unhealthy lifestyle, I recommend Dr. Fuhrman's low fat/vegan diet. If they need to lose weight, they will do so on either diet. I do not recommend a raw vegan diet, however, as I feel strongly that it does not provide enough vitamin B12 and protein. (Please keep in mind when I say this that I was a vegan for almost 25 years of my life.)
The priority for Type 2's is to lose weight. There are two ways to lose weight through diet:
1. Significantly limit carbohydrates and eat healthy fats and protein - LC/HP&F
2. Significantly limit fats and eat carbs and protein - HC/LF
If you combine carbs and fats, you will not lose weight. If you continue to eat carbs, you will force your body to make more insulin, which will make you gain weight. So I don't recommend the low fat/vegan option for the long-term.
Again, the second choice is not for Type 1's, who are physically unable to naturally process the glucose from carbohydrates. Eating large amounts of carbs will cause bg spikes and force you to use a lot of exogenous insulin. Using a lot of insulin will result in dangerous lows from hypoglycemia.
If you have any type of diabetes, run, do not walk, to find Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution book. It will empower you to save your life and prevent the complications that occur from having consistently high blood sugars.

Autoimmune disorders are running rampant in our world today. They affect people of all ages. If you or your child has an autoimmune issue, it is important to do what you can to eliminate extra strain that your immune system and body as a whole have to deal with.
We can't get rid of all of the harmful elements on earth. Toxins cause inflammation in the body because the body is working to protect itself. This is the immune system already working hard. If it is already working overtime due to having to process chemicals we have ingested through our food, drinks, medications, and smoking, and inhaled through pollution in the air, how will it respond when faced with viruses, harmful bacteria, and fungus? How will it respond when faced with heavy metal exposure? We have to keep as many toxins out of our lives as we possibly can in order to have a chance to be healthy.
Additionally, there are certain foods that definitely cause an inflammatory response in the body, causing the immune system to work extra hard. We can eliminate these foods for good and ease the strain on our bodies. The main culprits are sugar (in all forms), grains (which the body processes as sugars), and chemicals (such as GMOs, herbicides, pesticides, MSG, synthetic colors, flavors, sweeteners, and preservatives). Contrary to the beliefs of many, animal products do not necessarily cause inflammation. It is the hormones, medications, and unhealthy diets that certain animals are fed that are harmful to us. If you are particularly sensitive, avoiding red meat can be helpful.
Remember that the answers lie beyond just what we eat. Smoking, drinking alcohol, taking non-necessary medications, and not getting enough sleep are all factors that cause an inflammatory response in the body and force the immune system to work beyond its normal capacities. If you have been ingesting or have been regularly exposed to chemicals, you will benefit from a detoxification protocol. All of these toxins must be consistently avoided in order for the body to heal and to be able to function as well as possible.
IADHD is a subject close to my heart. I am passionate about natural approaches toward health. So when it became apparent that my young son was struggling with ADHD symptoms (and sensory processing issues, and learning disabilities, and sleep problems), I delved deeply into learning all that I could to be able to help him.
Today, my son is a teenager. He has never been medicated. He lives to his highest capacities by maintaining a lifestyle that supports his needs. He does this with consistency and compliance because he has the awareness that if he does not, he will suffer and struggle in school and life. The approach we use is not about fixing or curing something; it is about resolving the causes of unwanted symptoms and preventing the symptoms from returning.
There are factors that affect children's brains and bodies that lead toward the development of ADHD and other conditions, many of which can be controlled. These include exposures to toxins, such as heavy metals and chemicals (including medications, antibiotics, pesticides, herbicides, synthetic additives and preservatives in foods and vaccines, and household cleaners, fragrances and body products), eating an unhealthy diet without adequate nutrition, and exposure to drugs, smoking and alcohol. It within our abilities to remove as many of these toxins from our environment as early as possible to help our children to be healthy. However, if they have already been exposed and affected by them before birth or afterward, it becomes necessary to take these steps:
#1 Remove all of the toxic elements that you can control from your home and keep them away for good.
#2 Begin a healing protocol to repair damage that has already occurred.
#3 Once the healing protocol has had time to work (likely over a few years time), a maintenance diet and lifestyle will need to be in place as the child grows.
The healing protocol will involve several factors, including diet, detoxification, and physical repair. Most children who are affected need to do a gut healing diet such as GAPS or SCD in order to repair damage to their digestive systems from toxins. The toxins must also be removed from their bodies, so a detox protocol will be implemented. The body can heal itself when the proper parameters are set up for it. So once you use the diet they need for healing, and work to detoxify, the body will begin to heal. Additionally, in order for the brain to heal, it needs to be protected from extreme stimulation such as video games.
Children who are affected by ADHD are often very sensitive. They will most likely have food and chemical allergies and sensitivities. Certain foods will need to be eliminated from their diets and remain out for good. Their bodies cannot fully heal if they continue to be exposed to elements that harm them. Therefore, every child with ADHD needs to be tested for food allergies and sensitivities as a first step. No matter what the tests show, children with ADHD benefit greatly from maintaining a diet that eliminates all grains, sugars, caffeine, artificial colors, artificial flavors, and synthetic preservatives. All of these can contribute to hyperactivity and injury to the gut and brain.
People often ask me how my son handles peer pressure at school regarding food and video games. The answer is simple, he just says, "No." He tells me consistently that it doesn't bother him to eat different foods. He doesn't care when they have a pizza party because he knows that I will make him a pizza that he loves and can eat whenever he wants. He knows what toxins are and he has no interest in ingesting them. When he sees kids eating candy, he has no desire to participate. He enjoys the foods he brings from home and even more, he enjoys how good he feels because he eats them instead of junk foods. He knows that everyone is different and has different needs to be able to thrive. He enjoys being successful in school because he is able to focus and get his work done.
We worked hard to heal his body, and the payoffs have been beyond what most people can believe. His learning disabilities went away and he is in honors and gifted classes, his hyperactivity is non-existent, he is the best sleeper in the house, he rarely gets sick, and he has no issues with sensory processing anymore. To the best of our abilities, we maintain a natural, healthy lifestyle that works the best for him.
If your child has been diagnosed or is struggling with symptoms of ADHD, never give up hope - there is so much that you can do to help him or her. And if you are consistent and teach them as you go along, they will be able to maintain their health and live to their highest capacities once they grow up.
Lastly, and very importantly, there has been much more research about natural detoxification and healing for autism than ADHD. Read and learn about what people are doing to help their children with autism to heal. Some of these protocols are very important for ADHD as well. I will list just a few here that you can consider and look into:
